Define lens-correction parameters dialogue
The Define lens-correction parameters dialogue facilitates the creation and editing of a lens-correction parameters (*.dgl) file. These files contain the parameters required to correct the effects of radial distortion, the most significant distortion associated with lenses.
The correction of radial lens distortion is likely to have only a small effect on the derived grain-size distribution. However, it may be significant for some cameras with very wide-angle lenses.
Radial lens distortion varies between different cameras and with focal length. If the user chooses to apply a correction, it is necessary to create a lens-correction parameters file for each camera used. The creation of the file requires a series of photographs collected at different focal lengths under controlled conditions. Refer to the Technical information (lens correction) section of this documentation for instructions on how to obtain these images.
Once the images have been obtained, the correction parameters are calculated for each in turn:
- Click and select the first image file to begin the process of calculating the parameters. This will open the Select calibration points dialogue with the selected image.
- Maximise the window.
- Starting in the centre, click on equally spaced points within the image, moving radially towards the upper-left corner. The Correction function panel will be updated as each new point is added.
- The correction function curve should be a smooth line passing close to all of the data points. If any of the points lie far from the curve, click to start again.
- Once all of the points have been selected, click to calculate the correction parameters for that particular focal length and return to the Define lens-correction parameters dialogue.
- Repeat the procedure for each image.
Individual images may be removed by clicking . Once all of the images have been added, click to generate the lens-correction parameters file.
The procedure outlined above assumes that the camera being used stores information about the focal length used to take each image in the image header. If this is not the case, it is only possible to add a single image to the parameters file. It is recommended that this image has a focal length similar to that used to collect the images of the sediment to be measured (i.e. the images are taken from approximately the same height and cover a similar area on the ground).
Existing lens-correction parameters files may be loaded by clicking . Images may then be added or removed from the parameters file.

If multiple images are selected, the dialogue is opened repeatedly, once for each image. This facility is also available by right clicking on an entry in the Image information panel and the dialogue is called whenever a new image is added to the project.
Edit image properties dialogue
Certain mandatory information is required for each image:
- Site name - this should represent the location at which the image was taken. This might be a particular river or bar depending on the scale of the study being undertaken. For the second and subsequent images in the project this will be entered automatically (but may be changed by the user).
- Sample ID - this should be a unique identifier for the image.
- Width / Height of Controlled area - this should be the dimensions (in mm) of the rectangle that defines the sampling area (i.e. the distance between the controlled points in the image). For the second and subsequent images in the project this will be entered automatically (but may be changed by the user).
It is possible to add various pieces of additional information that may be included in the grain-size distribution report:
- Image information - most of the information in the Image information panel is automatically extracted by the software from the image header information (if present). The dialogue has six panels:
- Template options - these options provide the opportunity to save the current options to a template file and load existing options from a template file. This makes it easier to generate numerous reports using the same options. All of the other report options, with the exception of the Export options, are stored in the template file. The two buttons in this panel are:
- Export options - this provides the option to export the grain-size distribution information. There are two sub options:
- Export analysis - this exports the grain-size distribution report to a comma-separated variable (*.csv) file. If the box is checked the button is activated. Click this to define the filename and location to which the file will be saved.
- Export distribution plot - this exports the grain-size distribution plot as an image file. If the box is checked the button is activated. Click this to define the filename and location to which the file will be saved.
- Calculation options - the parameters in this panel define the way in which the grain-size distribution is calculated from the raw size information:
- Use percent finer/coarser than - defines whether the grain-size percentiles are calculated based on the proportion of grains that are finer or coarser than a particular value.
- Basis of distribution calculation - specifies whether the grain-size distribution is calculated to be comparable with a grid-by-number (Wolman) or area-by-number sample. See the Technical information (distribution calculation) section of this documentation for further details.
- Apply square-hole sieve correction - applies a correction to the size distribution to make it directly comparable to distributions based on the sieving of sediment using square-hole sieves. Click to open the Square-hole sieve correction dialogue to specify the parameters to be applied in applying the correction.
- Truncations - specifies the truncations to apply to the tails of the distribution. A recommended lower (fine end) truncation is specified based on the scale of the image. Upper and lower truncations may be entered in mm, Psi or Phi units: use the drop-down menus to specify the units. Click to update the settings.
- Cumulative plot preview - shows the effect of the calculation and truncation settings on the cumulative grain-size distribution. The preview plot is updated each time one of the settings is changed.
- Report contents - enables the user to specify which information to include in the report. Options are:
- Project information - include general information about the project (e.g. file name, client).
- Image information - include general information about each of the images (e.g. file name, focal length) .

Further information about the different methods of calculating the grain-size distribution are contained in the Technical information (distribution calculation) section of this documentation.
Square-hole sieve correction dialogue
The Square-hole sieve correction dialogue enables the user to specify the parameters to be used to apply a correction to the grain-size information to make it directly comparable to information obtained using square-hole sieves. Full details of the correction are provided in the Technical information (sieve correction) section of this documentation.
The Square-hole sieve correction dialogue may be accessed from the Report options and the Export options dialogues.
The user may enter either the mean grain flatness (c-axis/b-axis) for the site, in which case the correction factor is automatically calculated, or the correction factor directly. If no values are entered, default values are used (which should be appropriate for most sites).
Click to apply the correction and return to the Report options or Export options dialogue.
Report options - grain-size information dialogue
The Report-options - grain-size information dialogue permits the selection of which grain-size information to be included in the report. The dialogue is divided into four panels, each representing one section of the grain-size report. Particular information can be included or excluded by using the checkbox in the top-left corner of panel. The four panels are:
- Grain-size percentiles - this enables customization of the display of the grain-size percentiles in the report. The user may opt to define the particular percentiles to present (which must be provided as a comma-separated list) or to present all integer (i.e. 1, 2, 3, … 100) percentiles. The percentiles may be presented in mm, Psi or Phi units by checking the appropriate boxes.
- Distribution statistics - this enables customization of the display of a range of grain-size distribution statistics. The following statistics may be calculated:
- mean
- sorting
- skewness
- kurtosis
- Data summary - this enable the customization of a table of the proportion of grains in defined size classes. The class boundaries may be set at half Psi/Phi, quarter Psi/Phi, or user-defined intervals. User defined class boundaries must be presented as a comma-separated list and may be defined in mm, Psi or Phi units depending on the setting in the drop-down menu. Class boundaries may be shown in the report in mm, Psi and Phi units by checking the appropriate boxes. Data may be presented as:
- count/area in class (count used for area-by-number distributions; area for grid-by-number distributions)
- percent in class
- cumulative percent finer/coarser (based on settings in the Report options dialogue box)
Click to apply the options and return to the Report options dialogue.
